The Avant Gardeners Gift Guide

for the gardener,
the drinker,
the abstainer,
the kids and humans in your life.

Hi there,

Tis the season to buy something excellent for the people in your life.

We wanted to share some of our very favourite things that we thought you might want to know about.

Enjoy,
Maddie & Emily

Things that don’t cost much

  • A collection of handwritten recipes

  • A delicious handmade cordial (to drink with or without booze). We love rhubarb and ginger, elderflower, or raspberry.

  • A bouquet of hand picked herbs to dry or drink (we love Erin Lovell Verinder’s ‘bronchial buster’ which rosemary, thyme and oregano. Add a cinnamon stick, tie together with some brown ribbon, and order the recipient to make a big batch of tea when they’re feeling poorly.)

  • Propagate a little something from your garden or indoor plants to gift.

  • Make a few batches of carrot top pesto a la Emily! Get it in you.

Things we love in the garden

  • Seeds, seeds, seeds. We are addicted to Veggie and Flower Garden Seeds, and not only do they have seeds, but a whole host of other great gifts like copper garden labels, hanging herb dryers, trugs, tools and books . Explore in full here

  • This corten steel protea garden spike by Nina Patina is a beauty, and made locally in the Huon Valley, Tasmania.

  • Why not sign someone up to a community garden, and cover their first year membership fee for them? Find one near you here

  • Our indoor plants always need TLC. This plant food by The Plant Runner is an elixir for thriving foliage.

  • Want to grow things but limited by space? We love these grow bags (made from recycled plastic bottles) from Up On The Rooftop and perfect for an apartment or courtyard.

  • We love nothing more than a glass of vino outside in the long evenings and party lights add instant atmosphere. Check out these beauties from Hoselink.

  • Handcrafted garden tools made in Australia? Yes please. Loving these weeders and trowels by F.D Ryan.

  • Garden hose holder but make it #fashion. Design By Them nailed it with this hose hanger.

  • Get your garden boots off in style with this Antique Style Beetle boot jack.

For the book lover

Things to drink and stuff

  • These hand blown speckle coupe glasses set from Mink & Me are too, too cute.

  • We’re obsessed with Kip & Co’s brightly coloured Jaded glassware - there’s cocktail glasses, wine glasses, bubbly glasses, and coupes!

  • Em’s husband is one of the co-owners of Wildflower, an unique, inventive and delicious brewery in Marrickville, Sydney. Not only is their Roadcider damn delicious (so dry, not so sweet), but it has maybe the best label going around. (Y’all know how we’re a sucker for a great label).

  • Once you’ve listened to Sadie Chrestman’s episode on Avant Gardeners, and heard about her love for gin, buy their Fat Pig Farm Pink Gin or their botanical gin, made with foraged native botanicals from the farm itself, and produced in collaboration with their distilling guru Natalie Fryer

Things to drink for non-drinkers

  • We’re always a fan of Heaps Normal, and recently they’ve added Coffee Stout and a Tough Stuff Shandy to their delicious IPA and Hazy Ale offerings. All the taste, zero the booze.

  • Yes You Can have cocktails in a can, but without the booze. These alcohol-free concoctions are fresh and delish. From dark & stormy to G&T to Peach Bellini. They allow you to party with all the hurrah, and none of the hangover.

  • Arm yourself with StrangeLove Sodas. These are heaven, and awesome to have on hand when friends come over. Add them to gin, or perfect straight, they’re a crowd pleaser. We also love their tipple toppers for a festive garnish that your mother in law would approve of.

For the bod

  • Soothe those gardening hands with Myrtle & Moss Hand Balm. It smells divine and is packed with Vitamin C.

  • These hemp soap savers are kind to your skin and antibacterial for any gardening cuts you’ve endured

  • If you’re out gardening or drinking in the sun, you better get that SPF on you. This is for everyone including the most sensitive skin. Try organic Mother SPF

For the foodie

  • Using native Australian ingredients, Bush to Bowl ( an Aboriginal-owned social enterprise) have packets of Bush Tomato Spice (Ideal for sauces, stews, or as a creative garnish) and Cinnamon Myrtle Spice (delicious on breakfast or in curries).

  • Hazelbrae’s Tasmanian grown roasted hazelnuts are so moorish. Once you’ve had one of these you’re going to be a full blown hazelnut snob. Order the straight up roasted ones, the ones covered in chocolate or some hazelnut oil

  • Anything from Winespeak. This Daylesford-based wine and cheese lover's paradise is full of some of our very favourite things to eat and drink, and they deliver Australia wide.

For the little ones in your life

  • Fruit stickers are pretty bad, but holy moly how good is summer fruit? To divert these stickers from landfill, and turn them into art we love this hot-off-the-press poster made by Alice Oehr and Buffet Digital.

  • It’s never too early to get the young ones in your life into twitching. Whether they’re playing spies or ‘spot that bird’, these little binoculars will get the kids outside and into nature.

  • Can’t go wrong with a seed kit that even toddlers can have success with. Get yours from The Little Veggie Patch Co. They also have a range of kids gardening tools, watering cans, insect hotels and more.

  • This book by Costa Georgiadis is one for the whole family. There are tips in there about gardening with kids, in small space, the brilliance of bees, and easy peasy permaculture. It’s buying a gift for the kids that you’ll love too.

Think local

  • Find a local produce box, and give the gift of good veggies in the new year.

  • Go op shopping or visit your local tip shop for a unique find.

  • Find a local flower dealer and schedule in a great bunch of flowers for delivery after the craziness of the festive season (or a few bunches!) Use Grown Not Flown to search for seasonal produce.

In our orbit

  • We love the stunning salty artwork produced by Tassie duo Skye and Nic who are the creative brains behind Bobby Seaford.

  • Cara Edwards is the self-professed ‘big ol’ hermit’ who produces stunning ceramics. Get your hands on some here

  • What’s the next best thing after honey from your own hive? Honey from Sherwood Hill’s hives. The founder and bee keeper, Bear, has been a mentor of both Em and Maddie and their honey is legit delish.
